We frequently receive email inquiries from parent (actual email) which demonstrate paths to mistakes:

Parent 1 Email: “This is for my son a high school senior applying for BS/MD programs. Stats: ACT 34 (25 superscore), SAT: 1540 has clinical rotation >80 hrs shadowing and >150 hrs research with 1 publication and national science research award. We are currently working with another educational consultant. I am looking for brainstorming/assistance/refining his supplemental for “Why Medicine” and Why Us”.

Parent 2 Email: “We are just looking for some advice on interview prep. We’ve hired someone else but just need this help”

Our assessment:

Email 1 Assessment: This demonstrates that the parent has read books, visited websites and believes that they are doing all the right things the right way. The problem is that his son sounds just like every other BS/MD applicant. They hired tutors and an educational consultant to get the basics. His “Why Medicine” and “Why Us” essays will probably be unimpressive without a consultant’s in-depth assessment of his son. By requesting to hire us just for essays only, we would not know the student. In our experience, the same consultant should be involved in evaluating and enhancing the student profile so that profile can be the basis of his essays. The student narrative would otherwise seem disconnected.

Email 2 Assessment: Hiring a consultant only for interview prep is limiting since the consultant is not involved with the student’s profile, application, essays, etc.,…another disconnect. Blog: BS/MD Admissions Interview.

Successful BS/MD admissions involves a combination of (1) Student profile preparation and development. (2) Common Application review and editing. (3) School-specific Supplemental review and editing. (4) Medical School essay review and editing. (5) Interview preparation. (6) Media development. For successful admissions, we believe it should involve one consultant who knows every facet of the student’s admission journey! How do we know that it works?
