BS_MD_Planning_Summer_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant

It’s summer vacation! Many students and their families are beginning to travel. Students are finally now able to sleep much later. Some students are simply meeting up with friends!

But some students are also thinking about college and the Common Application.  During this time, our clients get serious!!! They know that they have to compete to win the coveted slots in BS/MD programs and Ivy League and highly competitive colleges and universities.  Blog: High School Juniors: Time to Get Serious About BS/MD Plans – II. Many of our clients have already completed their Common App personal statement.  Applying to the most competitive college programs involves strategies, preplanning, re-planning navigating and avoiding costly mistakes.

Our clients are aware that after Dr. Paul Lowe, BS/MD Admissions Guru provides continuous weekly BS/MD Skype or Zoom strategy sessions, including assistance with essay revisions, mock interview preparations and WOW factor analyses, they will be better prepared, than not only other students in their school, but also students in neighboring school districts and other states to gain admissions to BS/MD programs.

Why take all those AP courses, participate in university-related summer activities, be involved with all those commonplace extracurricular activities, hire tutors and essay editors to sound just everyone else so that you are rejected from not only BS/MD programs, Ivy League schools? Why? It’s time to get serious and work with an expert who has proven results!

Top 10 Reasons Why BS/MD Programs Will Reject You

Rejected_BS_MD_Programs_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor
This year, thousands of high school seniors were rejected from BS/MD programs. But…………

This year, we had an acceptance rate of 97%.

BS_MD_Admissions_Advisors_97_Ninety_Seven_Acceptance_Dr_Paul_Lowe

It may seem unimaginable to parents, high school counselors and even our fellow educational consultants that our BS/MD acceptance rate is 97%. But the reality is that we do things the right way and the best way for our clients by avoiding mistakes that will cause our clients to be rejected.

When parents hire us their children are already excellent high school students (at least one-dimensionally on paper). Through our strategies, we help to enhance their student profiles so they stand out from other applicants, and avoid mistakes. We implement a “mistakes avoidance assessment and analysis through out the admissions process. By understanding mistakes and the history of why other students were rejected and our professional discussions with admissions officers, we have observed 10 reasons why applicants to BS/MD programs are rejected.

Here are the top 10 reasons:

  1. Errors in student profile development in high school.
  2. Errors in the Common Application and Personal Statement.
  3. Errors in the supplemental essays.
  4. Errors in the “Why Doctor Essay”.
  5. Incorrect letters of recommendations
  6. Inappropriate interview responses.
  7. Inadequate resume.
  8. Not understanding the interconnectedness of the applications, essays and resume.
  9. Lack of understanding etiquette and manners in college and BS/MD admissions.
  10. Mistakes in developing or expressing WOW Factor.

Through global educational forums and conferences, Dr. Lowe continually networks and connects with college admissions officers, education policy makers, academicians and university development/advancement officers to discuss complex education-related issues nationally and globally. For BS/MD Admissions, Hiring Many Consultants Simultaneously – A Mistake!

Mistakes_kid_Avoid_Admissions_Game_Plan_Dr_Paul_Lowe

We frequently receive email inquiries from parent (actual email) which demonstrate paths to mistakes:

Parent 1 Email: “This is for my son a high school senior applying for BS/MD programs. Stats: ACT 34 (25 superscore), SAT: 1540 has clinical rotation >80 hrs shadowing and >150 hrs research with 1 publication and national science research award. We are currently working with another educational consultant. I am looking for brainstorming/assistance/refining his supplemental for “Why Medicine” and Why Us”.

Parent 2 Email: “We are just looking for some advice on interview prep. We’ve hired someone else but just need this help”

Our assessment:

Email 1 Assessment: This demonstrates that the parent has read books, visited websites and believes that they are doing all the right things the right way. The problem is that his son sounds just like every other BS/MD applicant. They hired tutors and an educational consultant to get the basics. His “Why Medicine” and “Why Us” essays will probably be unimpressive without a consultant’s in-depth assessment of his son. By requesting to hire us just for essays only, we would not know the student. In our experience, the same consultant should be involved in evaluating and enhancing the student profile so that profile can be the basis of his essays. The student narrative would otherwise seem disconnected.

Email 2 Assessment: Hiring a consultant only for interview prep is limiting since the consultant is not involved with the student’s profile, application, essays, etc.,…another disconnect. Blog: BS/MD Admissions Interview.

Successful BS/MD admissions involves a combination of (1) Student profile preparation and development. (2) Common Application review and editing. (3) School-specific Supplemental review and editing. (4) Medical School essay review and editing. (5) Interview preparation. (6) Media development. For successful admissions, we believe it should involve one consultant who knows every facet of the student’s admission journey! How do we know that it works? The Need for a BS/MD Admissions Advisor Even When You Have a High School Counselor

High School Counselor_BS_MD_Admissions_Advisors_Dr_Paul_Lowe

When parents of high school students call our offices inquiring about BS/MD programs, the first question I explore with them is why they are calling about our services if they already have a high school counselor?  Their response is usually 2-fold.  (1) The high school counselor is overwhelmed with many students.  (2) The high school counselor is not a physician-scientist and lacks the knowledge in preparation, specifically for BS/MD programs.

school_guidance_counselor_over_worked_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor
US Dept of Education (2017) reported that the student-to-public school ratio is on average, 455 students to 1 school counselor.

Because of the increasing hyper-competition to get into BS/MD Programs, many families feel overwhelmed and stressed by this particular type of specialized college admissions process.  Moreover, the process can seem so complex that families may want the assistance, resources and knowledge of an (physician-scientist) expert who focuses on BS/MD programs and who spends more time and individualized attention than school college counselors are able to provide.

Many parents and students discover too late (when their children do not receive BS/MD interview offers or receive rejection letters) in the BS/MD college admissions process that they should have hired a BS/MD admissions expert.

Benefits of a BS/MD Admissions Advisor:

  • An educational consultant who is a physician-scientist.
  • Provides one-on-one BS/MD program guidance and counseling.
  • Provides continuous comprehensive year-round admissions services.
  • Provides recommendations for research and shadowing opportunities and advise on appropriate student-driven research publications.
  • Provides traditional college and essay guidance and assistance as well as BS/MD supplemental essay guidance and assistance.
  • Provides traditional college interview preparation as well as BS/MD (MMI-type) interview preparation.
  • Develop strategies to guide you to your “Best Chance” BS/MD programs based on student’s profile.

INVESTING in a BS/MD admissions advisor is the best strategy for your child’s admissions success to BS/MD programs!

One of our (many) clients who currently attends Brown PLME reminded me that when we first met (when he was still in high school), Brown PLME was his dream school. Now he is LIVING the DREAM!

When his parents and relatives visit him, they enjoy dining at Kabob and Curry, because its authentic Indian cuisine is like his ”grandmother’s cooking”.

Transfer to Ivy Leagues – Top Premedical Programs

In our practice, we are increasingly seeing students who are making the decision to transfer while in their freshman and sophomore years.  Many of these students desire to be medical doctors and had applied to BS/MD programs (and Ivies) and were not accepted. Here are some of the main reasons I see why students decide to transfer:

  • Pre-medical school preparation:  Your current college may not have a strong pre-med program needed for medical school admissions preparation or a medical school acceptance track record. Ivy League schools: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn and Yale all have top premedical programs.
  • They are unhappy:  Why remain in an environment for four years where you will be unhappy and miserable – and pay tuition, room and board that will cost you (or your parents) $200,000 – $250,000.
  • Institutional prestige:  You may be attending your safety school and you want a second chance for your preferred school or you were discouraged from applying to your dream school.  In any case, you desire what we call an UPGRADE.
Upgrade_college_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor

Whatever the reason for transferring, the bottom line is that you need to develop an effective action plan to transfer. Especially, if you are considering to apply to a medical school after college!

Medical_School_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor
You want to attend a college with a superior pre-medical program.

Consider seeking professional, expert advice:  Why?  In my professional experience, I find that prospective transfer students need to develop individualized, effective transfer plans and implement them.  As a transfer student, you no longer have the assistance of your public high school or private high school college counselor.  You will need an educational consultant who specializes in college transfer admissions.  You’re basically on your own in the transfer process that is even more competitive than when you applied to college the first time!

Dr. Paul Reginald Lowe, founder and managing director of Pinnacle Educational Center Admissions Advisors Group, provides comprehensive counseling advice, exclusively for admissions to top private schools; Ivy League and highly-selective colleges/universities; BS/MD programs; graduate and medical schools and top visual and performing arts programs.   The admissions affiliate: Ivy League Admissions Advisors specializes in admissions to Ivy League and highly selective colleges,  Dr. Lowe also specializes in helping students who have been wait-listed, deferred or rejected gain admission into their top-choice schools: College Application Rejected. and student who wish to transfer to another college:  College Transfer Admissions Advisors.
