Are You Brown PLME-Ready?

Brown_PLME-Ready_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor

I am writing this blog because many parents contact us about Brown PLME. Many parents are aware that Brown PLME is one of the top direct BS/MD programs if not THE top BS/MD program. We find that many students, after visiting several direct BS/MD programs, remark that “Brown PLME is where they want to be”. As Brown graduates, and admissions advisors who have clients who are currently at Brown and have graduated Brown and are now in their medical residencies or practicing medicine, we KNOW Brown is a special place!

So here’s the question: ARE YOU BROWN PLME-READY?

For juniors, who will be applying next year, firstly, I recommend that you read: High School Juniors: Time To Get Serious About BS/MD Plans II. Secondly, you need to consider how to develop your WOW FACTOR. Thirdly, increasing your chances of admissions to a program requires expert advice, a professional who specializes in admissions to top BS/MD programs: Dr. Paul Lowe: Achieving High Acceptance Rates in BS/MD Admissions.

So the real question here is: DO YOU WANT TO BE BROWN PLME-READY?

It’s that simple!

What Happens After You Press SUBMIT on Your Application?

Submit_button_college_applications_Dr_Paul_Lowe

It’s the height of the college admissions season and students are submitting their applications for the Class of 2025! Many students are curious to know what happens after they press the “SUBMIT” button. They ask: What happens to my application?

From my discussion with admissions professionals at various schools, the admissions committees now begin the daunting task carefully reviewing and evaluating each application, including the essays, supplemental materials, transcripts and supportive letters of recommendations. For BS/MD applicants, the “Why Doctor” essay is also carefully considered. For some schools, like RPI, there will be an additional application after you submit your main application.

As a committee, they evaluate an applicant’s academic achievement, quality and potential; their characteristics and attributes. The admissions committees take into consideration an applicant’s personal background, extracurricular activity involvement, motivation, values, civic and cultural awareness, diversity perspective/tolerance, sense of self and community, attitude, creativity, enthusiasm for learning, maturity, responsibility, concern for others and risk taking. With regard to BS/MD applicants, their commitment, effort, passion and determination to be a doctor is carefully evaluated. It’s one thing to say you want to be a doctor, it’s another thing to show why YOU truly desire to be a doctor.

Medical_doctor_female_BS_MD_Admissions_Advisors_Dr_Paul_Lowe

After the evaluation process, using a holistic approach and team review assessments, they make decisions on who will be accepted, deferred (early), waitlisted (regular) or denied admission.

To many students seeking to attend prestigious universities, differentiating themselves is not an easy task. They read the same books, visit the same websites and group think in the same communities. We have observed that students (even with the help from parents) have little experience in personifying themselves and developing their WOW Factors (WF).

In the highly competitive admissions process, it’s a fact that applicants who stand out are accepted.  The cultural, intellectual, racial, ethnic and professional DIVERSITY by our design, within our team, helps us to identify what makes our clients stand out and get accepted!  Admissions committees are DIVERSE groups that seek to admit a DIVERSE incoming class of applicants.  Being diverse, and understanding DIVERSITY and how it plays out in admissions selection gives our clients a DIVERSITY COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE!  No other educational/admissions consulting firm can provide this type of advantage!

Happy Diwali!

Diwali_Dr_Paul_Lowe_BS_MD_Admissions_Advisors

Diwali, the five-day “Festival of Lights”, is one of the most popular and celebrated holidays in India.  The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects from spiritual darkness. Diwali marks a spiritual awakening and symbolizes “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance”.

There are several ways to say Happy Diwali:

  • In Hindi: “Diwali ki Shubhkamnayein” or “Shush Deepavali”
  • In Punjabi: “tuhanu Diwali diyan bohat both vadhaiyan”
  • In Gujarati: “Diwali ni mubarak or saal Mubarak”
  • In Tamil: “Deepavali nalvazhthukal”

What is significant and uplifting with respect to Diwali and my firm is that many of our clients observe Diwali as they are enjoying the campuses of their top-choice colleges which include, although are not limited to Brown, RPI, Boston University, Case Western, Cornell, Rice, Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth.  Many are now in the corresponding medical schools of their undergraduate BS/MD programs.

This year, on day four, I was given gifts and invited to participate in Diwali, with clients who are now friends whose children were accepted to Harvard, Brown (undergraduate), Brown PLME, Harvard, Yale, Cornell and Columbia.

Immigration Policy Effect: International and H4 Applicants to BS/MD Programs

Medical_doctor_BS_MD_Admissions_International_Students_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant

Changes in U.S immigration policy have a direct effect on students who are applying to BS/MD programs, for example, as a result of delays in issuance of Green Cards (also called Permanent Resident Cards). If their parent’s Green Card doesn’t come through before they turn 21, they “age out.” They then have switch to student or work visas to remain in the U.S. or face deportation. Delays in visa status can result in clouds of uncertainty. We work with many students whose parents are professionals who are highly skilled and come to the US mainly on the H-1B work visas who covet a Green Card or permanent legal residency.

We have worked with students who, because of delays in parent Green card approval, had to indicate that they were international students on their college applications, therefore limiting the number of BS/MD schools to which they could apply and disqualifying them from financial aid. Fortunately, over the years, many were admitted to several BS/MD programs, including but not limited to: Brown University Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME), Boston University Seven-Year Liberal Arts/Medical Education Program and Case Western Reserve University Pre-Professional Scholars Program in Medicine.

Black Men In White Coats

A UCLA study by Dr. Dan Ly, an assistant professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, finds that the proportion of physicians who are Black in the U.S. has increased by only 4 percentage points in the past 120 years, and that the share of doctors who are Black men remains unchanged since 1940. Black Americans represent 13 percent of the U.S. population.

Fewer Black men have applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978 and only 2.7 percent of American medical doctors are Black men. The negative trend for Black men could make it harder to meet the growing demand of the primary care physician shortage. Several medical schools are now beginning to focus their attention on effective pipeline programs if they hope to attract, retain, and graduate more men from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds.

Black Men In White Coats, founded and created by Dr. Dale Okorodudu (a pulmonologist and critical care physician), “seeks to to increase the number of Black men in the field of Medicine by exposure, inspiration, and mentoring.  To accomplish this, they are partnering with various medical schools across the country to produce outstanding short documentary videos which bring awareness to this issue that not only affects the black male population, but also the nation as a whole”.

As a Black physician-scientist and educational consultant an organization like this important to increase diversity in medicine. Dr. Lowe’s blog – Diversity: Utilizing Our Differences for Success.

BS/MD Admissions: Your WOW Factor Matters

WOW_Factor_BS_MD_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant
WOW Factor matters in BS/MD Admissions!

Over the past 10 years, I have been talking in my webinars/seminars and writing in my blogs about the WOW factor and its importance in successful college admissions acceptance! This is just as important in BS/MD admissions as more student sound the same on their applications: High GPA, great SAT/ACT scores, helping the economically disadvantaged, publishing research papers shadowing a “gazillion” hours and of course “ill-constructed” 4-page resumes. With all this sameness, when parents call our practice to hire our services, we can almost pre-determine that they will be rejected from BS/MD programs as well as Ivy League and highly selective colleges and universities.

When parents (who were not our clients!) call us after their child has been rejected and they hire us we immediately see by reviewing their applications, essays and resumes why they were rejected – no WOW Factor!

We can even sometimes determine which region in the US. (Texas, Maryland, Virginia, Washington, New Jersey, etc) they are from simply by reviewing their resumes, courses taken shadowing etc. – and so can universities! They sound exactly the same. This, of course, makes it easier for admissions committees to reject in bulk from the same high schools and regions!

Dr. Lowe and his team continue to use the Wow Factor Admissions Concept with their clients.

BS_MD-Admissions_WOW_FACTOR_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant
Can you tell which object shape stands out?

What’s your personal “Wow Factor” that will make you stand out and get accepted to the college of your choice? It’s a factor that your admissions officer will look for as well as discuss with the other admissions committee members as to the reason you should be accepted.

different_stand_out_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor_Educational_Consultant
Who do think an admissions committee will choose to enter a BS/MD program? See: Our Acceptances…Our clients all have WOW Factors!

What is a personal “Wow Factor”? Your charisma, confidence, motivation, initial impression, appearance, communication skills, attitude, self-esteem, authenticity, presence, etiquette, manners, harmony, rhythm and vibe all contribute to your wow factor.  Your wow factor is what makes you different! It’s your distinguishing trademark, your personal brand that must be placed in a positive light to a committee of six to ten diverse people to get accepted. It’s the kind of aura that is genuine, authentic and resonates. To truly identify your WOW factor, you need an outside perspective, a third party, that understands how admissions committees will review your character.

It takes Dr. Lowe and his team hours to weeks discover and months to cultivate a client’s WOW factor. After that, we develop strategies to convey that brand to Ivy League and highly selective colleges and BS/MD programs. We are confident that our clients compared to anyone in their school or region will have their WOW Factor – that that why they get in!!!!

Our admissions strategies help applicants spotlight their unique characteristic(s) that make admissions officers say Wow! We want this student!”

Advice on BS/MD Program Resumes

BS_MD_Program_Resumes_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor

BS/MD applicants are expected to have superior resumes. The resume serves as an important role in applicant selection process where the admit rates are normally 1% or 2%. Admissions officers /committees view your resume as summary of your accomplishments and achievements during your high school career. How your BS/MD resume is framed makes the difference between rejection and acceptance!

Program directors and admissions officers spend seconds scanning and evaluating your resume and will not read past your second page of your resume unless they are truly interested in your application. So if you are submitting a resume beyond two pages, you would better have a compelling hook or hooks that will inspire program directors/admissions officers and not bore them.

sResume categories differ in styles and content so you must be creative to bring attention to who you are and specifically your character in your resume. Our team spend unlimited time and effort in resume development and revision because we know that a successfully created resume must demonstrate your brand and effectively communicate it to program directors! Many websites provide facts and information on what your resume should look like (some even have videos of students who discuss their specific resume) but remember BS/MD programs are looking at you not that student.

Dr. Lowe and his team assess and analyze resumes as a part of their Continuous Comprehensive Admissions Advisory Services. We assist you in “re-calibrating” your resume so that it describes you! Having a winning BS/MD resume as a part of your student profile is important for successful admissions. And we know that: BS/MD Admissions Advisors – 2021 Acceptances
