The University of Rochester: Rochester Early Medical Scholars program is an eight-year bachelor’s of arts or bachelor’s of science and MD program from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Students enrolled in the program enter the University of Rochester with an assurance of admission to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry when they successfully complete their undergraduate degree programs, including GPA and premed requirements. Students admitted to the program are not required to provide MCAT scores. REM is highly competitive and therefore has an acceptance rate of 0.8% for 10 spots!

In essence, REM conditionally guarantees your admissions to medical school to be a doctor! Our clients who were accepted in REM feel relieved and happy because of this guarantee!

Easiest BS/MD Programs to Get into?

From time to time, during my seminars, with discussions with parents who call to inquire about our services and clients (during our strategy sessions) I am asked what is the easiest BS/MD programs to get into. Some students and their parents will begin to name schools!

While there are some programs that are not as competitive (to let’s say Brown PLME – acceptance rate 1.8% or University of Rochester 0.8% acceptance rate), there are no easiest BS/MD programs to get into!

Top BS/MD programs have a a lower acceptance rate than even the Ivies and the “easiest” programs to get into have acceptance rates in upwards of 20% This means, of course, that in these “easiest” programs you have a 80% probability of being rejected. How is that easiest to get into?

With more BS/MD program closings and the competition to gain admissions increasing, expect these easiest programs to be LESS EASY!

Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program

The Rice/Baylor Medical Scholars Program (MSP) is an 8- year direct BS/MD program and one of the best and highly-selective of direct BS/MD programs. Each year, hundreds of qualified high school students apply to MSP, and many are rejected; only six students are accepted each year.

MSP students are accepted at Rice University and conditionally accepted to Baylor College of Medicine; conditionally, because to enter into Baylor they must have a minimum GPA and MCAT scores.

Northwestern HPME Program Closed for 2021

University of Cincinnati’s Connections Dual Admissions Program (its BS/MD program) has announced that it will not be taking applications for 2021. Prominently placed on its website is the following: “The 2021 Connections (BS/MD) application has been CANCELED. This application will NOT open this year.”

This direct BS/MD program allows qualified high school seniors to apply and be accepted to the University of Cincinnati undergraduate college and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine simultaneously. In the past, many of our clients were accepted to this program!

Since the Connections Program will not be accepting applications in 2021, the COMPETITION to gain admissions into BS/MD programs will now increase because there will be fewer programs.

This year, we have had an increased number of clients applying to direct BS/MD programs. Few of our clients, by their choice, decided to apply to Brown Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) because they felt that ED may be too restrictive. We respect our clients’ choices!

Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) reported: From a pool of 2,530 ED applicants, 88 students were admitted to PLME.

We are happy to report Dr. Lowe and his team’s results. Here are our results of our 8 clients who applied to Brown PLME Early Decision:

  • 5 were admitted to the College and PLME
  • 1 was rejected from PLME, but admitted to the College
  • 1 deferred from PLME to regular decision
  • 1 rejected from PLME (College and PLME), but was accepted Early Action to MIT

Brown University: “PLME applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a video portfolio as part of the application process. The video portfolio provides a wonderful opportunity for us to learn more about you.”

FAUCI EFFECT ON BS/MD APPLICATIONS

As college and university enrollment overall has dropped this fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic, research and reports have demonstrated that there is a record number of applicants to medical schools.

The number of applicants to medical schools has increased by 18% this year over last year, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC); and this is driven by the example of medical workers and public health figures such as Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Our research and knowledge of the BS/MD programs has seen an increase in interest in BS/MD programs. More parents are encouraging their children to become doctors because of the uncertainty in the future of non-healthcare careers and the fact that there is a shortage of U.S. doctors. AAMC reports that United States will be short 54,000 to 139,000 physicians  by 2033, the AAMC estimates and that more than two out of every five doctors now practicing will reach retirement age over the next 10 years.

In our practice, we are seeing more parents calling us seeking BS/MD admissions help. In fact, we are seeing a trend in high school students switching to BS/MD program admissions from traditional college admissions who are currently juniors. More international high school students and H-4 visas students are also requesting BS/MD assistance.

What does this mean for BS/MD programs? More high school students will be applying and there will be even more HYPERCOMPETITION!
