What’s the Secret to Our Clients’ High Acceptance Rate to BS/MD Programs?

Secret_BS_MD_Admissions_Advisors_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Independent_Educational_Consultant

Many parents (and students) believe that top grades and SAT scores, plus an expansive resume (with lots of extracurricular activities) are all you need to get into a BS/MD program. It’s an erroneous belief that causes top students to get rejected from BS/MD programs as well as League colleges after years of hard work!

Year after year, Dr. Lowe’s clients stand out amongst other applicants and are accepted to BS/MD programs.  Here is a list of strategies that are unique only to BS/MD Admissions Advisors with Dr. Paul Lowe, Admissions Advisor/Expert:

  1. WOW Factor Development:  We identify and uncover each student’s distinguishing trademark so that their personal brand can be placed in a positive light to admissions committees.
  2. Insider’s Knowledge-Network:  We utilize and leverage our proprietaryknowledge, network of contacts and close working relationships with top colleges and BS/MD programs to help our clients.
  3.  Professional Relationships/Collaborations/Connections: Throughout the years, we have developed professional relationships, collaborations and connections with a myriad of faculty, administration and admissions officers and personnel at colleges/universities and BS/MD programs through professional conferences, seminars, meetings, networking sessions and college visitations.
  4. Foresight: By understanding the admissisons landscape, we have developed the foresight to help our clients avoid risks and irrevocable mistakes that can cause rejections. We know when to effectively adapt our strategies to avoid risks and mistakes.
  5. Character Development: Valued attributes are not measured in transcripts, test scores and resumes.  We help students develop authentic presentations of themselves in the application process by developing and showcasing: intellectual, moral, civic and performance virtues.
  6. Communication Intelligence:  Admissions criteria also includes your ability to effectively and passionately communicate your desire for admissions with admissions personnel verbally, non-verbally and literally. Are you mindful of how you present yourself and how people perceive you?  We develop personalized strategies so that our clients develop meaningful first and last impressions verbally, nonverbally and literally.
  7. Simulated/Mock Admissions Committee:  We continually review and build your student profile to application completion using a simulated admissions committee approach using our team and former admissions officers   By doing so, we know how different college admissions committees will evaluate your application and therefore increase your chances of acceptance.
  8. Empirical Analytics:  We embrace Empirical Analytics by using data, technology, client-case studies, campus-expert panels, our proprietary knowledge, and over 28 years of experience to answer questions, navigate challenges, predict outcomes and to help our clients make informed decisions that provide results-based admissions success.
  9. Working Directly with Dr. Paul Lowe, Admissions Expert: Unlike other educational consulting firms, where clients are assigned to different employees or consultants, Dr. Lowe, as lead consultant/admissions advisor, personally works with each of his clients so that they directly benefit from his expertise, experience, contacts and the collective knowledge of his educational team.  Dr. Lowe’s exclusivity allows him to provide individualized attention, commitment and principal availability to each client through weekly Skype/Zoom sessions.

BS/MD Program and College Admissions: How Will Your Character Be Assessed?

Character_BS_MD_Admissions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant

The work of selecting students for admissions into BS/MD programs and Ivy League colleges and universities is becoming more complex. Each year college admissions officers and their committees review thousands of applications and seek to predict the likelihood of those applicants to meaningfully contribute socially, culturally and personally to their specific college communities.  BS/MD programs, Ivy League and highly selective colleges use a team-review process to holistically evaluate each applicant when creating a particular class during the admissions process.  That means acceptance to these colleges is not based on a simple formula of cognitive measures (grades and test scores).  Instead, admissions officers consider a variety of factors, including the student’s academic record, extracurricular interests, intellectual achievements and personal background, to decide who will be rejected or accepted.

In the hypercompetitive selection process, College admissions offices rely less on cognitive-based measures (standardized tests and grades) and more on character attributes when choosing applicants. They are turning to research showing that a student’s potential for long-term success is predicted less by test scores and more by traits such as optimism, curiosity, resilience, metacognition, awareness, and adaptability.

College admissions professionals have spent several years determining other character traits that are most important to their respective institutions. When admissions officers have chosen the applicants they plan to present to their admissions committee, the applicants have been determined to have traits such as honesty, resilience, curiosity, perseverance, leadership and the capacity for teamwork.  Traditionally, these character traits are discovered by admissions officers using personal essays, interviews, lists of extracurricular activities, and letters of recommendation to get a holistic view of applicants.  Admissions officers now have other tools for character assessment at their disposal.

Character_character_counts_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Admissions_Advisor

For college admissions, character traits tied to an interview, essay answers and letters of recommendation, are just as important and impressive, if not more so as, academic credentials.

I have always advised my clients to consider their character attributes and the holistic approach as they prepare for college admissions. With regard to direct BS/MD clients, BS/MD programs assess student character or the lack of their good character in many ways. The latter, will of course cause rejections!

Congratulations to our clients who have received secondary applications from Albany Medical College!

What does this mean regarding the Application Process:  Rensselaer reviewed their Common Applications (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute/Albany Medical College – Accelerated Physician-Scientist Combined BS/MD Program) and now has referred them, as qualified students, to Albany Medical College (AMC), which will then review the secondary applications and reach out to certain students for an interview (in January, February, or March).

From that pool of students, AMC will make offers of admission to the program. The application process is lengthy and notification begins in early April.

For our clients, in this highly selective process, it’s one step closer to being accepted into a top direct combined BS/MD program and the goal of becoming medical doctors.

Choosing the Best BS/MD Admissions Advisor/Consultant

Choosing_the_best_BS_MD_Admissions_Advisor_Consultant_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant

So, your child has decided to apply to BS/MD programs and you, as a parent, don’t want to make mistakes that can cause instant REJECTIONS (after years of hard work).  You want to hire an experienced and qualified admissions consultant/advisor who can increase your chances of ACCEPTANCE.  What’s next?

Here is a checklist of questions to help you decide why Dr. Paul Lowe and his team at BS/MD Admissions Advisors are the best:

1.  BS/MD Admissions Experience

  • How many years has the consultant advised applicants applying to BS/MD programs?  Experience is important!  We have over 20 years of experience!  We specialize in providing comprehensive consulting on all facets of the BS/MD application not just hourly help on individual elements of the application. (Since BS/MD admissions rates are under 10%, it’s important to get comprehensive help on the whole application and the admissions process.)
  • Does the consultant firm have graduates of BS/MD programs with admissions advisory experience?  Yes. Several of our supporting team are graduates of BS/MD programs.  Dr. Cartwright-Lowe, senior consultant and managing director is a graduate of Brown PLME.
  • Has anyone in your consulting firm worked in an allopathic (MD) medical school admissions office or BS/MD program?  Experience working in a medical school admissions office is probably the most important factor as no one in the field knows more about admissions than individuals who have worked in the admissions offices of the medical schools to which you will be applying.  Our supportive admissions officer team members have served on the admissions committees for BS/MD programs.
  • Does the consultant work full-time as an admissions consultant?  This is all we do!  One-hundred percent of our time is spent as admissions advisors. We are NOT medical residents or doctors who are part-time admissions advisors.  Providing admissions advice is our full-time job!
  • Does the consultant visit university and BS/MD programs?  We continually visit colleges and universities with BS/MD programs.  We are not office-bound.  We continually visit universities to network with admissions officers to understand the changes in individual BS/MD program admissions policies and to discover what they are looking for in applicants to benefit our clients.

2.  Application & Essay Editing

  • Does the person editing your application, personal statement and essays have experience in reviewing and rating thousands of medical school applications, personal statements and essays?  Dr. Lowe has experience reviewing thousands of college applications, personal statements and BS/MD essays for over 20 years.  In addition, he works with a team of former admissions officers who work closely and collectively with him who have the knowledge of what admissions committees are looking for in applications and personal statements. We know what to add and cut out in your applications and essays!
  • How many times do you review your applications and essays?  As a committee, Dr. Lowe and his team review applications and essays at least 10 times and send at least 4 revisions to clients.

3. Methodology and Communication

  • Does the consultant have a clear methodology for determining your unique positioning strategy or narrative and for driving the entire process?  We work closely with each client, using our knowledge experience and contacts in the field to ensure that our clients are competitive and unique.  This gives our clients and added advantage!
  • Do I work with several different consultants or one consultant?  You work personally, individually and directly with Dr. Paul Lowe, physician-scientist and admissions advisor. He uses a team-based approach with his associates to help his clients.  We use a committee-based approach to determine the correct strategies for our clients.

4.  International Students

  • Does the consultant provide services for international students?  We specialize in providing comprehensive consulting on all facets of the BS/MD application for (non-U.S. permanent residents/ non-U.S. citizens).  There are only a limited number of U.S. BS/MD programs that even consider international student applicants.  Therefore, trying this process on your own or with an inexperienced admissions expert will certainly have you REJECTED!
  • How does the consultant provide admissions advisory services to international students who live abroad? We continually and conveniently communicate through Skype, email and phone.

5.  Cost and Clients Served

  • How does the cost of the consultant compare to other consultants?  You get what you pay for! An inexpensive consultant means inexpensive service.  Be careful about companies that offer hourly services at too low a cost. We have been in business for over 20 years because of our success rates.  Our fee is an academic investment for future success.
  • Is the consultant someone in demand nationally who works with students across the entire country?  We work with students throughout the U.S. (and the world). Dr. Paul Lowe is truly in demand. He works with clients and helps them gain admissions to BS/MD programs including: Brown PLME, RPI/Albany Med, Case Western, Penn State, Union College/Albany Med, University of Rochester, TCNJ, NJIT, Rice/Baylor, Stony Brook, SUNY Downstate and more.
This year, 11 of my students were accepted to Brown PLME.  Blog: Brown 260th Open Convocation. That’s not including the 14 who were accepted the Brown University (the College)!

Common Application 2023-2024: New Supplemental Essays

Common_Application_2023-2024_questions_Dr_Paul_Lowe_Educational_Consultant_Admissions_Advisor

August 1 was the launch day for the Common App 2023-2024 as well as the first cycle since the Supreme Court’s affirmative action ruling. As a result, many colleges are changing their supplemental applications to reflect the shift and have introduced new essay prompts this year, many of which are clearly linked to the Supreme Court decision.  Many highly selective colleges, including the Ivies, have already revised or added supplemental questions which range from direct references to the Supreme Court decision to broader questions about an applicant’s cultural background and lived experiences.

Examples: This year, Harvard removed a previously optional essay prompt on its supplement and replaced it with five required short-answer questions.  Brown University modified its PLME question and now has seven Brown (the college) supplement questions rather than three the previous years.

Dr. Lowe and his team have been and is currently participating in conferences and seminars with Ivy League and BS/MD program admissions officers regarding what colleges are doing with supplemental essays in response to the US Supreme Court decision prohibiting race-conscious affirmative action and how admissions officers are responding to it.

Dr. Lowe, therefore, is aware and possesses the cutting-edge and knowledge of what successful strategies students should use to write meaningful and convincing college essays to increase their chances of acceptance to Ivy League and BS/MD programs.
